Ladies and gentlemen, good morning!
I am Wang Shi, and it is a great honor to attend this Asia Climate Change Leaders meeting.
In 2009, I received an invitation from UNEP to attend the UN Climate Change Conference, COP15, in Copenhagen, Denmark, along with two Chinese entrepreneurs. We represented 100 Chinese companies at the conference and issued the Chinese Entrepreneurs “Beijing announcement”: In response to environmental destruction, sandstorms, water pollution, and other man-made disasters in China, we are determined to chase a green and low-carbon path. Among these 100 companies,one-third were from the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.
Today, Shenzhen is the third-largest city economy in China, not only leading in attracting capital and technology but also at the leading position of environmental protection and chasing a green path. In 2023, Shenzhen’s energy usage, waterusage, and carbon emission level per 10,000 yuan GDP were one-third, One-eighth, and one-fifth of the national average in China, and the clean energy installed capacity ratio of 78.7% in shenzhen. This means a successful green transformation of shenzhen’s economic and social development. It is no coincidence that over one-third of the 100 companies involved in the “Beijing announcement” were from Shenzhen. Cities, especially mega-cities, play an important role in China’s green transformation experience. In 2013, the Vanke Foundation, which had attended in the UN Climate Conferences for 5 times, invited the Shenzhen government to send a delegation to the COP18 Climate Conference in Poland to share Shenzhen’s experience. That year, the number of companies joined in the “Beijing announcement” increased from 100 to 3,000.
In 2015, at the Paris COP21 Conference, the number of companies joined in the “Beijing announcement” reached one hundred thousand (100000), forming a green and low-carbon cluster centered around Shenzhen Special Economic Zone enterprises. More significantly, a delegation of Chinese companies from 17 industries and 5 business associations was invited to attend in this COP conference for international exchange. After the conference, the leaders of these industry organizations back to china and promoted green and low-carbon development at their annual meetings, driving the green and low-carbon transformation across the whole industry.
With the involvement of industry associations, the number of companies following in green and low-carbon development has increased very fast. In 2016, at the COP22 Conference in Marrakech, Morocco, the number of companies joining in the “Beijing announcement” reached an shocking 1 million, with nearly one-fourth from the Chinesetextile industry. China textile industry, as a major processing center for the global textile industry, once known for environmental pollution and wastewater discharge, withing more than two hundred thirty thousands (230,000) companies began to take action, they start to go on the green and low-carbon path. In 2020, Sun ruizhe, the president of the China National Textile Federation was elected as the president of the International Textile Federation due to outstanding contributions to green and low-carbon field.
At the COP28 Conference held in Dubai,UAE in 2023, there are More than 300 entrepreneurs represented Chinese companies attended this conference. There was a obvious increase in both emerging green industries and large traditional companies. For example, Longi, a well-known Chinese solar energy company, not only organized a delegation from the solar energy industry to attend the conference but also together with the China Green Association to establish an independent pavilion in blue zone. Another case is Delong Steel, a private steel company and a major carbon emitter, because of social responsibility, Delong has undergone a low-carbon green transformation, turning a traditional steel factory into 4A-level tourist place of green production parks. Can you believe it? They have also applied their low-carbon green production line in Indonesia, with a green steel production base with an annual capacity of 3 million tons located in the Tsingshan Industrial Park, now in its third year of production. We have organized some international NGOs to visit their place.
I am looking forward to the Chinese companies sending even more positive signals at the COP29 Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, this year. I have reason to believe that the carbon neutrality roadmap announced by China in 2020 will not only be achieved but achieved ahead of time. I also warmly invite everyone to visit the Delong green steel production base in the Tsingshan Industrial Park after the meeting here. Also, I welcome you to join us in attending New York Climate Week, held during the UN General meetingin in late September. In the context of the US-China game, the collaboration of countries in addressing the issue of global climate change is a rare greatest common denominator and common value.
See you in New York. Thank you all!
