China may surpass Britain as the world’s second-largest destination for overseas students in the next few years, according to British newspaper The Independent.

According to China’s Ministry of Education, more than 397,000 overseas students from 202 countries and regions were studying in China in 2015. The number was up about 5.5 percent from a year earlier and puts China before Canada, Germany and France. The number of students studying for degrees accounts for more than 46 percent of the total and was growing at more than 12 percent.

Beijing, Shanghai, and Zhejiang are the top three destinations.

Mr. Wang Huiyao, President of Center for China & Globalization(CCG),  joining China 24 and points out there are several tendencies attracting foreign students come to China:

First of all, China is the largest developing country in the world, and the growth is still very high, that attracted lots of foreign students come to China; Secondly, in recent years China had taken more efforts to attracting more foreign students come to China as well. For example, Peiking University has start Yenching Academy aiming to recruit foreign students. In addition, since last year Shanghai and Beijing allowing foreign students working in China through working visa or internship visa.

However, China still ranked low in terms of the percentage of international students compare with U.S. and other developed countries, which means huge potential for China to grow in term of attracting foreign students. Considering China’s job opportunity, big market, One Belt &One Road Initiative and increase number of enterprises going global, there need lots of foreign students to participate. As G20 Summit had just held in Hangzhou, China is need to attracting foreign students to expand international networking, consolidate relations, building bridges, and to have more ambassadors between China and other countries. I think these momentums will continue urge to China to strengthen ties with other countries, continue turning more Chinese students going global as well as attracting lots of foreign students come to China.

As long as China improve those policies, particularly open more English programs and employ more foreign faculties and relax on the visa requirements , we will see more foreign students come to China in the years ahead.
